Four-year-old Zoe* loved rainbows, unicorns, and wearing her hair in braids. She did not have a stable home environment and lived with her mom in a car temporarily before being placed in a foster home.
MAKS supports kids like Zoe by providing personal care and comfort items as well as clothing and furniture while they are displaced from home. Working closely with the Department of Child Services, MAKS ensures foster families are equipped with essentials like beds and car seats when a child arrives at their home, day or night. A 2025 grant from the Porter County Community Fund provided $10,000 toward this mission.
“We believe our community is a village, and it truly takes a village to raise children,” said Elizabeth Mirr Wysocki, MAKS Vice President and Treasurer. “We can help break the cycle many of them are trapped in—one that often leads their own children into the same difficult situation they had to escape. By working together, we can offer these children a brighter, more hopeful future.”
Zoe was adopted by extended family members in time for Christmas. During her time in foster care she had the resources and the reassurance of a loving family.
